 The Medicare Part D drug benefit began January 1, 2006.
At the beginning of this year, new enrollees are overwhelmingly Medicare-Medicaid dual eligible beneficiaries whose pharmacy coverage has been switched from Medicaid to Medicare.  Other eligible seniors may enroll beginning May 15th.
