Why become a member?
The Michigan Psychiatric Society is your professional association in the state of Michigan. Our focus includes all aspects of psychiatric care--public, academic, and private practice psychiatry, as well as psychiatric residents. Our priority is to improve the quality of mental health care in Michigan.

Here are some reasons to be a member:

  • MPS maintains a strong lobbying and legislative presence in the Michigan legislature and state regulatory agencies - advocating for the profession and our patients
  • MPS provides representation for psychiatry in the House of Medicine, through participation with the Michigan State Medical Society and maintaining relationships with the Michigan Osteopathic Association
  • MPS participates and provides leadership in coalitions with other health and mental health professional associations and patient and family groups in advocating for access to quality care and ending stigma and discrimination against patients and psychiatric treatments
  • MPS provides public education about psychiatric disorders and treatment by working with the news media and disseminating information to consumers, family members, and the general public, as well as policy makers
  • MPS offers quality CME programs through scientific meetings
  • MPS provides representation to the American Psychiatric Association
  • Membership provides you the opportunity to have input and participation through committees and local chapters.
  • Membership provides you with collegiality, a base of consultants and a community of your peers.
  • The Michigan Psychiatric Society is your advocate and your representative in these challenging times. Without a strong and unified organization, who else will advocate for the interests of psychiatry?

Qualifications for membership

  • The APA and MPS are organizations composed primarily of medical specialists who are qualified, or in the process of becoming qualified, as psychiatrists. The basic eligibility requirement is completion of a residency program (or currently enrolled in an accredited residency training program) in psychiatry accredited by the Residency Review Committee for Psychiatry of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPS©), or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Applicants for membership must also hold a valid medical license (exception: hold an academic, research, or governmental position that does not require licensure), and provide one reference who is an APA member.
  • The APA has a dual membership requirement whereby APA members must also be members of the district branch within whose jurisdiction they reside or practice. Likewise, to be an MPS member you must also be a member of the APA.

Transferring District Branch membership

  • A member must transfer district branch affiliation when moving his/her practice or residence from the jurisdictional area of one district branch to another. To transfer your membership, contact the APA Office of Membership or your former district branch. You will be sent a transfer form for you to complete and return. If your DB dues are current and there are no outstanding ethics complaints in your file, your transfer will be approved and you will become a member of your new DB.
  • Retired members are not required to transfer district branch membership if you move; you may remain a member of the branch with which you had been associated.
